Lightweight and low-density blocks can absorb water rapidly from freshly applied render. If this suction is not controlled, the render may lose moisture before it has hydrated correctly, reducing working time and potentially affecting its bond and long-term performance.
This Weber range includes products for controlling suction, creating a mechanical key, reinforcing render and securely installing render beads before the main coating is applied.
These products may support:
A suction assessment should be completed before rendering. In normal conditions, carefully misting absorbent blockwork with clean water may provide sufficient control. The blocks should be evenly dampened without becoming saturated.
Where suction is particularly high or variable, Weber RendAid may be specified. It is applied as a tight preparatory layer and textured to create a heavy stippled surface. Weber identifies moderation of high suction on lightweight and mixed substrates as one of the product’s intended uses.
Weber Mesh Cloth may be incorporated where reinforcement is required, including around openings, across mixed materials or at other areas of localised stress. It must be fully embedded within the compatible render layer with the specified overlaps.
Weberend Bead Adhesive is used to secure the required render beads before the main system is applied. Beads should be correctly aligned and selected to suit the intended render depth and exposure conditions.
The background must be sound, stable and free from dust, loose mortar, efflorescence and contamination. Lightweight blocks can vary considerably in strength, density and absorbency, particularly where recycled materials are present.
Always confirm the block specification and follow Weber’s current technical guidance for suction control, preparatory coats, reinforcement, render thickness and curing conditions.
