Fassa Base Coats For Painted Surfaces

Stable existing paintwork can sometimes be retained when renovating a façade, provided it remains firmly bonded, sufficiently absorbent and compatible with the proposed render system. A reinforced skim coat can then create a level, continuous surface for the selected decorative finish.

Paint type and condition must always be assessed first. Loose, flaking, glossy or poorly bonded coatings should not be covered with new render.

Assessing Existing Paint

The coating must be solid, securely attached and sufficiently absorbent. Complete adhesion tests in representative areas before deciding whether the paint can remain.

Remove flaking paint, loose material, dirt, grease, organic growth and other contamination. Active cracks, moisture problems and defects within the underlying render must be investigated and repaired before applying the skim coat.

Oil-based, glossy or non-absorbent coatings are generally unsuitable for direct application and may need to be removed. Product compatibility should be confirmed where the existing paint type is uncertain.

Applying the Reinforced Skim Coat

Where reinforcement is required, Fassanet 160 should be embedded within the wet K-Over Plus 3.30 layer. Adjacent sections should overlap according to the system specification, with additional reinforcement used around openings and areas where different backgrounds meet.

The mesh must remain completely covered and should not be placed directly against the painted surface.

Selecting the Final Finish

The completed skim coat should be allowed to cure before the compatible primer, paint or decorative render is applied. Drying time will depend on application thickness, background condition and weather.
